Parents who seek answers about how to best provide a healthy life for their children may spend hours on reading articles online and asking other parents for advice. Here’s a giveaway of a resource I’ve recommended over and over: Kelly Dorfman’s Cure Your Child With Food: The Hidden Connection Between Nutrition and Childhood Ailments.
This book is a touchstone for any parent with a child experiencing physical, mental, and learning challenges. Dorfman explains how to become a “nutrition detective.” I heard her speak locally a few years ago and still feel like it was one of the most informative and educational talks I’ve ever attended.
Dorfman is a master at explaining complex metabolic and physiological processes in a way that makes sense and showing parents how to make changes that can have profound effects. She covers a wide variety of conditions and approaches including supplementation.
Hers is not a one-size-fits-all approach. There is no magic bullet because bioindividuality is key. One child may be dramatically thrown off by a certain type of food that works well for another. Reading the book will help parents suss out possible approaches to take and discuss with their healthcare provider.
Chapter topics address:
- Digestive upset & constipation
- Skin issues
- Learning and focus issues
- Anxiety & other mood disorders
- Developmental delays
- Chronic ear infections
- Growth delays
… and much more!
This book was originally published as What’s Eating Your Child? and now includes a new chapter on the unexpected connection between gluten and insatiable appetite.
Kelly Dorfman is available for consultations by phone and in her office near DC.
She has upcoming talks in Berryvile, VA; Salisbury, MD; and Ocean City, MD.

My son reacts to fake sugars. Finding it hard to avoid in many products. I can only cook so much from scratch. I need help and ideas. I already discovered four years ago he is highly sensitive to artificial coloring. That was hard to watch for but has become easier as the years go by.

I have heard great things about Kelly Dorfman. I truly agree that food has everything to do with how our children react to things and life in general. When I was a new mom it took me a few years before I finally caught on to the connection. I was finally able to turn everything around by cutting out the sugar, msg and artificial food dyes.
